"ODI debut CJ McKay (Australia)"

That one line entry on CricInfo's "full scorecard" for the 5th One Day International: India v Australia at Hyderabad, late in Australia's innings as I type this, brings a flood of memories.

Clint McKay was a stand out kid as much as a cricketer when I headed to Sydney in 1997, terminating my long involvement with NWCA/EBKCA junior representative teams. We may not have crossed paths since, but my memories remain particularly positive. He seemed to have gained all the good things you can from one of the district's most prominent sporting families.

In much earlier days when an entrepreneurial EBKCA grabbed the chance to experiment with the Glenroy Valley Cricket Centre in vacant buildings in Morgans factory beyond the trestle bridge, Clint's grandfather Mal, then also a butcher in Napier Street, headed up basketball's parallel operation in the next building. Later Clint's father Colin took on a key admin role with Pascoe Vale Central Cricket Club. Much earlier his uncle David had been the most dominating junior footballer I ever saw play.

Might have to get up a couple of times during the night to check the scores.
